DH Sample Projects

Relating to the last post, here I show you three different projects that have a relation with the digital humanities.

  • Victorian Women Writers Project: It is about exposing lesser-known British women writers works of the 19th century, so it’s clearly showing literature but on the digital ambit, also involving research.
  • Perceptions of sexual violence: Views of Sexual Assault on College Campuses : This project is a research based on surveys, regarding college students’ attitudes on sexual assault. It is a DH project because it is a social experiment plus information from other digital media.
  • Public anthropology: It is a website for students that want to learn about ethnical issues. As it is a website where the students can interact and share their information related to anthropology topics it is a DH project.

What is Digital Humanities?

Searching for definitions of what the digital humanities are, I found this interesting one on a website called What is Digital Humanities, where there is a new definition created by different people every time you refresh the web page. With this example, you can see that there is still discussion about defining this relatively new term.
Definition:
On one level, digital humanities is about applying computational methods to questions and problems that have traditionally interested scholars in the humanities. Computational analysis can make it possible to tease out patterns or relationships that are difficult, or impossible, for humans to detect. The purview of the digital humanities extends beyond methodology, however. It is also about raising new questions and exploring topics such as digital literacy and the cultural impact of new media. Whatever the approach, academic libraries have an important role to play in providing the infrastructure and support that digital humanities projects require in order to be sustainable.
